Dismal service. The fibre optic broadband is no faster than the non fibre optic I had from Plusnet, and the range of the router is very weak. I can no longer use my tablet in the garden. Contacting customer service is dreadful, they tend to shout at you and not listen, also they're not technically trained and whatever they say is unreliable. They told me to get wifi extenders to increase the range but they haven't addressed the problem of the weak signal, which is probably a faulty sender aerial. Bloody abysmal service and if I can't get out of the overpriced contract I shall certainly not renew it.

Customer service initially very good but it took over 6 weeks to get connected. Very slow broadband speed and customer advisers now ignoring my emails. It's cheap for a reason!

I am coming to the end of my first contract with SSE Broadband and feel it would be fair of me to review their service. The changeover around April 2015 (from BT) went relatively smoothly with the phone going over first and about two weeks later the broadband went across. There was a day's hiccup following this (I believe an exchange fault)but since then the service has been excellent and I have had no cause to complain. I am hoping to negotiate a good deal with SSE (after looking at alternatives on-line I am in doubt as to where I would go)

Switched from PlusNet to SSE late last year as I wanted to move from my old 15GB usage plan to unlimited so I could use my new Samsung smart TV and watch movies without going over limit. SSE and PlusNet both supplied via BT as no LLU on my exchange (northchapel). Speed and reliability just the same as PlusNet but SSE cheaper as special offer was available. Only problem is customer service only available working hours Monday - Sat so if you have a problem you may have to wait or use mobile broadband as I did. Same Technicolor modem as PlusNet uses.

A faultless move with everything done when expected or sooner with Broadband change over occurring seamlessly. Moved from TalkTalk and the improvement in every area is clear. Better service, better connection, better, more friendly and informative customer service. I am delighted and a lower charge as well!! I would recommend SSE Broadband without reservation!

After an initially difficult set up (Preserve it's worth it!) SSE have been a brilliant broadband provider. Having the fibre package my speeds match the estimations given to me before I signed up as well as exceeding them at times. Customer services are excellent but there are sometimes awfully long waits, sometimes in the region of ≥45 minutes so could be inconvenient for some.

Been with SSE for 5 months now with no issues, highly recommend to anyone. But take note that you may need to chase them up during your set up; having called them mulitple times I once discovered my order had been cancelled by mistake and I had to start over but overall there weren't any major (I.e. Days not weeks) delays.

After some difficulty with enabling the connection , SSE are as good as another provider, the customer service I found good.
The initial difficulties seem to stem from the Open Reaches way of doing the connection, in a word POOR. SSE customer services were good and provide compensation for the finical costs incurred by the delay.

Broadband worked well till it failed on sunday am. Found there was no support after 1400 Sat. Spoke to the 1 person on support for phones who thought the broadband line was OK but she didnt have any broadband training. Documentation with the router is non existant. So no advice what to do if you can resolve problems with a power off/on. No info on how to log onto the router admin from a laptop. Found that out by guesswork. Once on I could see a PPP error. But again no info on what user/password I should have set here. No info on whether I should reboot to factory settings from the laptop or the reset 'hole' on back of router. So no broadband for 24 hrs due to lack of support or any support info. Not every customer could have tried fixing these problems, but I could have, if there had been some support paperwork with the router. Seriously considering asking to go back to my old slow& more expensive PhoneCoop provider. They were good & reliable.
Not of this helped by SSE failure to realise the original go live request had failed & thus my cutover was 2 weeks later than required. Plus SSE sent out router only 1 working day before cutover & then set out another on the afternoon after I went live. Overall a shambles of a company for broadband & I wont be recommending it to anybody. Shame as the phone service has been good.

I joined SSE at the New Year. I have been with SSE for Gas & Electric for about 8 years and assumed it would be good to change from my previous provider; TalkTalk.

I was given no start date for the broadband and then found it was apparently the same day as the phone had started.

The first router would not connect to the internet. The router from SSE is so big it does not even fit on the shelf where the last router (a third of the size) had sat.

The second router arrived a few days later and connected straight away.

However, after about 9pm onwards the speed drops to between 1.0 mbps and 6.0 mbps. The signal either shows as 'very low' or 'no signal'.

A couple of times I have not been able to connect to the internet for over 30 minutes.

When I explained these issues to SSE they started saying there would be an engineer charge and if i cancelled my service charges would be incurred.

I should have thought twice when two of the sales staff, when I asked what the minimum access line speed was (as opposed to the estimated access line speed) they could not tell me.

SSE have been ringing every other day to discuss the issue but their suggestions that the router should be permanently left on and having to use a pin to do a hard re-set every time there is a problem leave me without any confidence that they are actually looking at what is causing the drops in line speed.

If this carries on then I will consider leaving SSE altogether along with my utilities as SSE are one of the 'big 6' energy firms who, according to the press, have apparently failed to pass on energy savings to the customer as well ...

We just switched to SSE and this has been the worst decision ever, they say up to 7.5mbps but were actually receiving at the most i've tested 2mbps.
Its shocking and now we are stuck in a contract with a terrible supplier.
Thats what you get for a cheaper price. Avoid at all costs

I would like to thank for the best broadband which I had in UK!

All other companies charge high prices for low speed broadbands and let me tell you - it's insane! Then I moved to new place and I found about SSE company I tried and from now on I recommend it to everyone.

This company doesn't spend a lot of money for advertising so it's common that most of us even don't know about SSE.

Just one minus is that you need to spend around 20 minuets to be connected to customer service. I hope they going to sold out this problem soon.

In the end even you need to spend around 20 minutes on phone but you going to have high speed broadband for amazing price.

    All the best!

Avoid at all costs. If there was a zero rating I would definitely choose that for the Speed and reliability options above.

I have been having issues with this service since signing up some 6 months ago.

Firstly, the package which I signed up for was only partially taken over which meant even though I had ordered Telephone, Calls and Broadband in a package they only ported over the telephone line and not the broadband too. This meant that I was being billed from them for the full package and from my previous supplier for the broadband too.

Having since rectified this and since the broadband has been provided by SSE I have had barely any service with intermittent complete drop outs if it works at all.

I went through all their tests and still there were issues I asked for a new router and they never sent one. I also called back and they said that they had closed the complaint as they called me and no one answered - how about leaving a message???

I called to let them know I would be going with another supplier and they tried to pull the old "termination fee" being in the "terms and conditions of the contract" to which I politely reminded the call handler, through a muffled laugh, that it was indeed them who were in breach of contract and that they are more than welcome to pursue me under breach of contract if they foolishly believed they would indeed win.

Moved to SSE recently from BT, who kept adding things to my account I didn't ask for (i.e. BT Sport). I have never switched before, however, and was a little apprehensive about doing it.

I have gone from paying £200 a quarter to £87 for the same level of service (17mb unlimited broadband and anytime calls). SSE have also given me this for £5 a month for the first 6 months (including line rental!).

The speeds are also faster, as I have a new router, I suppose.

Thus, I am very impressed. Their energy prices are totally extortionate, but broadband is fantastic. Thanks, SSE.

Speed and reliability is SHOCKING - switched from sky which worked fine by the temptation of a cheaper service - yes it is cheap but if it doesn't work what's the point. Speed down to less than half meg on busy periods on a line that's capable of 15mB plus and has been tested to do so by Openreach. When I quizzed the openreach engineer when he came to test he just laughed when I said SSE where providing the service - saying don't expect to use at periods then was his comment. On top of that the router is of such poor quality it's pathetic - when I complained SSE told me to get a booster - but again what's the pint when it keeps loosing it's outside line. If you want a cheap service go for it but if you need to use the internet look elsewhere.

I wrote first review of SSE Broadband on 22 October 2015 because my switch over was a disastrous, tedious and it took 6 working weeks all together.
My contract was taken on the 18 September and Broadband started working finally after many phone calls to the customer services & many complaints on the 2nd November .
I was without broadband for 5 and half weeks.
On the 9th October I called the customer services and was assured that my router will be sent to me in the next 7-10 days and broadband will work. I was very polite, and a lovely lady at the call center told me that she would fail a complaint, because I was waiting 3 weeks.
12 days later, after 25 min of waiting to speak to customer service, I was told that my broadband order has not even been placed. That they will look into the fault on my line and someone would call me back. No one called me back, I had to spend another 30 min, waiting to be connected to the customer services. I wasn’t getting of the phone until I spoke to the supervisor with assurances.
They use BT engineers, so they depend on their scheduling of repairs – another delay.
After BT engineer repaired the physical fault on the line, I waited another week for the router to arrive and for the broadband to go live.
First week broadband speed was very low - on average it was between 4,6 Mb download speed up to 5,4 Mb. The contract is for 17 Mb download speed, I was explained that first week is stabilising period, and that in reality in the future I will be receiving between 5 and 8 Mb depending on my area. Today is 22nd November and speed is 10,8 Mb. I had 3 days last week of speeds between 1,8 and 2,5Mb but this resolved itself without having to contact SSE Broadband customer services.
The advantages are: call centers are 0800 number, staff is polite and well trained, very good deal for broadband and phone rental.
Disadvantages: incredibly long and troublesome change-over, call centres closed on Sundays, phone line Service Charge and Access charge, details below***

If you want to spare yourself agony of waiting TO COMPLETE THE SWITCH OVER from your old broadband supplier, call SSE as soon as your phone line is connected and check on your order status. Call every day – is my advice.

***Depending on the package you choose 0845 & 0870 calls are either inclusive up to 70 minutes during the same inclusive periods as your call package or are charged :
Unbundled Tariff Numbers beginning with 084, 087, 09 and 118 are charged as the sum of two elements: a ’Service Charge’ and an ’Access Charge’. The ’Service Charge’ is as published by the business being called while the ’Access Charge’ is 6.9p per minute. 0845 and 0870 calls remain non-chargeable (no Access Charge or Service Charge will apply) for the first 70 minutes,
for the relevant periods of your calls package and calls to these type of numbers will not be subject to a set-up fee.
When not inclusive in the package, 0845 calls cost a maximum of 13.90p for a one minute call and 0870 calls cost a maximum of 19.90p for a one minute call for all these packages.

What people have got to understand is there are freephone numbers that will get you to be able to talk to nice friendly people, hence the good reviews, but if something actually needs doing you have no chance because of an abysmal customer service infrastructure, hence the bad reviews.

And that explains why most of the reviews are split into these two contradictory camps.

I'm trying to switch as an old current customer to the new offer service, which surprisingly is allowed! But try finding the full and relevant terms and conditions on their website. It's about time ofcom got proactive on such things

I've been with SSE fur about 3 weeks - speed same as bt- however broadband started playing up and home phone no connection. Wanted to call fur assistance as important weekend and family needing to call from America urgently. SSE phone and broadband no. ( yes it's UK based) but it closes Mon to Fri at 8pm and Sat at 2pm closed all day Sunday! Question, when does a normal working person need their home phone and broadband - for me eve after 7pm and all weekend - no service - no contact numbers - no chance of any help - think before committing!

Broadband service AVOID at all cost!
My contract date started 18 Sept 2015 special offer, 2 years free broadband £8 for line rental.
After receiving all paperwork, contracts, no router arrived. I was without internet for 3 weeks, my phone line didn’t work for 2 weeks and when it started working, there was noise disturbance on the
Telephone line, I couldn’t make any calls, because it was so noisy . On the 9th October I called the customer services and was assured that my router will be sent to me in the next 7-10 days and broadband will work. I was very polite, and a lovely lady at the call centre told me that she would fail a complaint, because I was waiting a long time. 12 days later, after 25 min of waiting to speak to customer service, I was told that my broadband order has not even been placed. That they will look into the fault on my line and someone would call me back.
Nothing happened! I called again after 4 hours, to the point when I got to speak to SSE manager assure me that my broadband will be ordered and to explain to me, that because e they source their engineers from BT it will take a while.
22nd October: I called again, to check what the status of my broadband service was. This time I got to speak an engineer, that told me because on the fault on my line, he will have to send a technician to physically check the line and the earliest appointment is on Monday 26th of October.
I will come back and write a follow up . I am in London area of W9 \Westminster, so if you want to spare yourself this waiting agony, call them as soon as your phone line is connected and check on your order status. Call every day – is my advice.

Nothing happened! I called again, to the point when SSE manager Michael Frankland called me back, to assure me that my broadband will be ordered. I asked to have it sorted in 3 days as a priority customer, for waiting so long, he wasn’t able to do so.
I am leaving SSE , and going back to SKY broadband – had no problems with them.

I just switched last week so early days, but after using talk talk and BT, it a breath of fresh air. The switch over did not go quite to plan due to BT but when I rang the customer support no menu's, no holding, just right through to a UK centre who are brilliant. I checked my speed last week before I switched and it was about 7.00 mb in the morning.(I used 3 checkers to get an average) As soon as I had my line connected I re checked the speed and was getting 18-20 mb. How does that work as its the same line. Anyway, as I said early days but its worth it just for the customer support!

Was fine for first 2 months than they show you down and ask you to pay more for fibre broadband.

Very poor ADSL service, customer services is non-existent unless you wish to stay on the phone for close to 30 minutes listening to Nat King Cole before you get to a real person. Constant dropouts, high latency issues whilst playing PC games (WoW etc) extreme lag & rubber banding. Overall very displeased with service. In other words AVOID THIS ISP LIKE THE PLAGUE...

Received the new service on the agreed date. When setting up the calls to the Customer Service Centre were answered after only a short delay. I had previously contacted BT and done a telephone tour of India before I got a UK Call Centre! I am now receiving a much better broadband/telephone package for almost half the price. So far very happy certainly pleased 'I went for it'.

Switched to them phone and broadband at the beginning of August. Then they disconnected my broadband and now I'm in 5th week of trying to get it re-connected. Nightmare company to deal with, constantly fobbed off by support and still don't know when I will have broadband back. The few pounds you may save with them is really not worth it.

Just had fibre bb installed this morning, was online immediately with speeds of over 34mbps download speed and over 9mbps upload speed. I was sceptical as SSE are the new kids on the block but so far so good. All for £10 a month for 2 years!

Was previously with BT elsewhere - changed to SSE when I moved. Cannot fault the broadband or phone service. Given a date when it would be connected - no delays. Good speed and reliability. The wireless router provides good connectivity around the house. All this and about a sixth of what I was paying BT.

Customer service has been awful - broadband delayed by six weeks. They didn't contact us to arrange fitting of the new fibre modem, failed to correctly book a fitting date. On the plus side now installed we are getting 36mb on fibre.

Placed order for phone and broadband expecting to be up and running within the stated 23 days .. but nothing .. phoned them after 5 weeks to be told the engineers were working on it .. after 6 weeks still nothing so phoned them again to be told there was a line problem that they had contacted BT about and unfortunately they could not transfer me over, I later checked with BT & line was good and unbelievably they never even contacted BT to ask about transfering my line .. best to avoid and got with a reptutable ISP provider.

no stars as did all reading up about them, spoke to them on the phone to ask a few questions, then phoned next day only to find that they would only supply the service if you had a phone line already, I had established that this was not required, then they moved the goalposts, although the offer was not supposed to end till 16/9, I wasted hours on this for nothing.

After reading reviews, I thought I'd change from BT to SSE. But I've been on the phone now for 29 minutes, and still not answered. A woman keeps thanking me for my patience and tells me my call will be answered as soon as possible. I think I'll stick with BT.
