Trying to set up a phone connection with SSE took the completion of two online forms ( which say they will get in touch within 48hrs - nothing back from them after 3 weeks), and 3 telephone calls lasting 37min, 48min and 58 mins, as I was having to call from an international line this was not good - I was told they couldn't call me back on an international number so had to wait. Once you got hold of an individual they were polite but the wait is totally unacceptable.

Please consider carefully before you use SSE for your broadband. My mother is 85 and uses the internet to live stream her favourite programs. This is her life line. We had problems with SSE from the start. We upgraded in the hope it would change. The customer service when you have a problem is a shambles. We have been paying a DD for months with no service. No emails have been replied to. I have switched provider and am prepared to go to any lengths to not pay another penny to SSE. I have spent valuable hours trying to find a resolution that they seem unable to provide.

What people have got to understand is there are freephone numbers that will get you to be able to talk to nice friendly people, hence the good reviews, but if something actually needs doing you have no chance because of an abysmal customer service infrastructure, hence the bad reviews.
And that explains why most of the reviews are split into these two contradictory camps.
I'm trying to switch as an old current customer to the new offer service, which surprisingly is allowed! But try finding the full and relevant terms and conditions on their website. It's about time ofcom got proactive on such things

Internet worked "well" for 2 weeks or so, reliable but quite poor. Then all of a sudden nope. Absolutely no internet access for 3 days so far (doesn't seem like it is going to stop). Customer service seems to think we are uploading huge quantities of data, we aren't. Would never recommend this for anyone.

RE what Greg Forrest, Consett, SSE 2019-05-11
This you wrote I have a few times and worse it seems this is the way SSE do business. They must be trained to do it this way.
'The Part of your post I refer to'
When i spoke to Rachel an arguement took place and i explained that if i had to pay the fee after all the issues that i wouldnt continue with SSE. She assured me i didnt have to pay any fees and the previous advisor was incorrect. She took no responsibility for any of the previous issues raised apart from the automated line complaint .A month later i checked my bill online and what do you know a £60 connection fee charge added to the bill , i rang straight up to try n speak with Rachel , she wasnt availiable and hasnt been ever since that moment and along with that she pretended as if none of what she said previously had even took place!
But you should know even when take a contract with them on the sales line. You ask something and in conversation ask something else they will over talk you in louder voice to drown what you ask until they finish talking. They always want and need to be the alpha it seems. Not that your competing why should you when you can end the call and get another provider. That is unless you have already signed up.
Do they also still talk through the whole contract which can take upto 2 hours to do. No other service does that and you don't listen either so what is the point. They go on and on and on bla bla f'ing bla yawn zzz !!!

Shambolic. The broadband service on the website actually links you to gas and electric when you try and do a home move which means they will direct you to cancel then try to penalise you for thinking it is cancelled. Beoadband itself is poor too, video meetings often cutout due to speed. Pay the extra and avoid SSE.

Very pleased so far (this is day 1 of having broadband with SSE in a new property). Given the deal currently on offer (ie 'free' for 2 years with 12 pounds lines rental), there seems to be a backlog (I waited 5 weeks to be up and running). When you order, you need to let the 14-day cooling off period pass before they can do anything with your activation, the phone line is then activated 7 days later, then the broadband around another 7 days after that. Mine was a little longer, as unbeknown to me, once the phone line is activated, you actually need to call up and place the broadband order (as, apparently, would have been advised in the welcome letter which I never received). Luckily, I found all this out by weekly calls to get status updates). I must say though, every time I called their call centre, every operator was fantastic - they took the time to go through my query methodically, were friendly, and gave me confidence that, although there was a back-log, my order was being worked on and gave me estimated dates for completion. I've now got my broadband up and running, and all is good, hopefully it remains so.

AVOID!!!!
Absolute shambles of a company. Signed up to their 'Fixed and fibre' package, which was to include energy supply (electric and gas) as well as broadband. The energy tariff wasn't the cheapest available to me, but with the discounted broadband price it worked out pretty well. However I have now come to realise this was all too good to be true. I have now been waiting around 3 months for my broadband to 'go live'. This includes multiple visits from engineers and hours on hold on the phone to multiple people repeating the same story over and over and over. Every time I call they say 'we need an engineer sent out', then the engineer comes out and tells me everything is fine and tests it to make sure. Then I have to go back to SSE and repeat the whole cycle again. I am now currently on my 4th or 5th 'Go live' date with yet again no broadband. I could of went with another company and had internet in my property by now. I would warn anyone considering SSE as supplier to stay well clear. Not worth the hassle!

For broadband do not waste your time with this company. There is a reason they offer cheap broadband and it is definitely not quality. Terribly slow connection unless between 11am and 3pm. Customer service teams always state they will look in to things and get in contact but never do then you play cat and mouse resolving issues. Should've kept Sky.

I wanted to cancel my "no-fixed term" contract and was told I could get a discount. What I got instead is a new 18 month contract, but was only told I am getting a discount! Now I'm having to pay cancellation fees due to not being aware of the new contract.

10/10 - first class ISP - everything works fine since start date - using Unlimited Fibre plan, speed test shows 27ms ping, 36.16Mb/s download speed and 9.16 upload speed with 4 devices connected on local home network. Router is VERY GOOD with AC wifi standard, USB disk & printer sharing and many other useful functions.

Had lots of problems, so they sent an engineer still had problems, they refused to send out a router as they sent one to start with. The router i first got was probably ok it was the phone socket that needed to be replaced. they sent me out a faulty replacement router. Spoke to a very unhelpful manager who refused to send me another router even after i promised to send it or the other one back. She said no as it would cost money to send it out. A whole £4.99 utter joke. many emails and calls, just to be fobbed off.its disgusting how they treat people just because they dont bother to test the routers that are old tec, never again will i have anything from them.

It’s cheap for a reason. The wifi is terrible and the main reason why we switched broadband suppliers. We never had a problem with other companies wifi and the new provider we have the download speed in our lounge is 39Mb, with SSE we couldn’t even get a signal the wifi is that poor!!! The other problem was evening times, Im not saying SSE throttle speeds at peak time (Ive never asked them so don’t know) but during our time with them it really is my belief they do. Sometimes downloading a film around 7pm took an hour, plugged in to the router, set it going at 3pm or midnight and it’s done in 10 mins. My biggest fault with them was the wifi range, absolutely terrible.

Excellent customer service: Called the faults tea
And an advisor answered within 2 minutes. The lady established Remotely that the fault was external and arranged with openreach to have the fault fixed within 48 hours. In fact the connection was up and running within 6 hours. Thank You SSE!

I had SSE broadband for about 4 or 5 weeks and speed seemed ok but noticed in the mornings I had sometimes dropped the connection. Then after about 7 weeks it began to get annoying. This never used to happen on Sky, plusnet, talk talk, all of which I had used successfully, especially Sky. Phoned customerservices and spoke to a very attentive Lucy who tried various things and I seemed to have a stable and fast connection for couple of days. Then it started dropping again. Lucy in the meantime recalled me as promised to check progress. It was acknowledged something was wrong and SSE arranged for Openreach to come and check my line out. They found no fault, but did update master socket. But low and behold I have had continuous service ever since. Lucy called me back again as promised to check progress and arrange for outage credit. All in all very happy, and fair dues, customer service very attentive.

Hi I thought I would provide an update about my Ultrafast broadband from SSE (found on MSE) - bit of a dispute originally as I needed a new line MSE said free line, SSE wanted to charge £160. 6 week delay whilst they tried to transfer a business line with BT which I wanted to cease. Eventually got new line fitted after much chasing.
Having read the horror stories on here beforehand, I'm quite pleased with the service so far. Yes it does appear to be throttled at peak times, but still seeing 30-50MB download, 18-20MB upload speeds. My son hasn't started shouting about the speed of Youtube, Xbox etc yet. Time will tell if it remains reliable and speedy when holidays end. So far cheap deal for £21 line and BB, but not quite Ultrafast.

Since we moved to SSE Phone and Broadband we have had nothing but problems, all reported and one fix at their end as Openreach confirmed there was no problem at our house. Upgraded to Fibre, and now can't use the internet at all unless you want to visit only the homepage of a website. Now trying to move away from them due to poor service (only been with SSE for 3 weeks) and they are charging me 12 months termination charges even though there has been problems on the line that they can not fix. Senior Management Team did nothing to help other than send a letter saying the complaint in now in Deadlock.
Don't Bother, complete waste of money and time.

Took out an 18 month fibre (39Mb/s) contract with SSE back in Nov 2016 after the local ADSL service went to rats. At £21 a month it seemed like worth the risk despite dodgy reviews at the time. The next cheapest fibre we could get was about £40.
The kit and the service arrived on time as promised and, for the past nearly 2 years, it's just worked.
Speeds have been consistently around 35 - 37Mb/s from the start, more than enough for our typical use of a bit of streaming to tablets and laptops + general internet browsing. We usually have 1 or 2 laptops, 3 tablets and 2 or 3 smartphones going at a time and it manages to keep them nicely fed.
The wifi from the supplied modem / router has been a little weak for our 300 year old THICK stone walled house and did get a few drop-outs upstairs but picked up a cheap £25 Tendra AC6 router to use as an additional AP and that cured that!
Recently I realised that we'd gone past the end of our contract and reverted to their "standard" pricing of £42 per month since May. Really the only gripe I can think of is that they didn't give any sort of reminder or move us to their new monthly pricing automatically.
Still, phoned them up yesterday to see what they could do and got a very helpful and pleasant assistant who ran through the options without any up-selling or pressure and we settled on changing to line rental (no calls cos we don't use them) plus 76Mb/s broadband at £30/month less a £4 discount for having our electricity with them as well.
That's the only time we've needed to use their customer services and it was exactly how customer service should be!
So that's £26 for full speed FTTC with no headaches or hassles, on a 1 month rolling contract and price guaranteed for 3 years.
Happy bunny and more than happy to recommend SSE based on our experience over the past couple of years!

We switched to SSE broadband a year ago and have had no problems. The speed we get is low - but that is due to location - it is actually slightly better than we were getting with our old provider and is enough for our needs - general internet use and Netflix etc. Customer service is excellent, response time to logging a phone outage was very good, the service has been very reliable. I'm very happy with SSE.

Started of great but 2 months in and countless phone call to complain about the speed of the broadband I am wishing I had stayed with BT. Waste of time to try and cancel they will not let you even if you are not getting what you paid for. I am on a 18 month contract and now counting the days till I can get watching catch up tv when I want.

Shocking - total waste of money. Ultra Fast which can't even load an IPlayer stream when nothing else is connected to the router. Shocking throttling from their provider (daisy). SSE customer service is useless. Do not be sucked in by the cheap price, stay with BT!

I joined SSE at the New Year. I have been with SSE for Gas & Electric for about 8 years and assumed it would be good to change from my previous provider; TalkTalk.
I was given no start date for the broadband and then found it was apparently the same day as the phone had started.
The first router would not connect to the internet. The router from SSE is so big it does not even fit on the shelf where the last router (a third of the size) had sat.
The second router arrived a few days later and connected straight away.
However, after about 9pm onwards the speed drops to between 1.0 mbps and 6.0 mbps. The signal either shows as 'very low' or 'no signal'.
A couple of times I have not been able to connect to the internet for over 30 minutes.
When I explained these issues to SSE they started saying there would be an engineer charge and if i cancelled my service charges would be incurred.
I should have thought twice when two of the sales staff, when I asked what the minimum access line speed was (as opposed to the estimated access line speed) they could not tell me.
SSE have been ringing every other day to discuss the issue but their suggestions that the router should be permanently left on and having to use a pin to do a hard re-set every time there is a problem leave me without any confidence that they are actually looking at what is causing the drops in line speed.
If this carries on then I will consider leaving SSE altogether along with my utilities as SSE are one of the 'big 6' energy firms who, according to the press, have apparently failed to pass on energy savings to the customer as well ...

I've been with SSE fur about 3 weeks - speed same as bt- however broadband started playing up and home phone no connection. Wanted to call fur assistance as important weekend and family needing to call from America urgently. SSE phone and broadband no. ( yes it's UK based) but it closes Mon to Fri at 8pm and Sat at 2pm closed all day Sunday! Question, when does a normal working person need their home phone and broadband - for me eve after 7pm and all weekend - no service - no contact numbers - no chance of any help - think before committing!

This is not an actual review of SSE, rather a review of why I am not with them. After being with TalkTalk almost from their inception I decided it was time to upgrade to fibre. As the T-T offering seemed quite expensive to upgrade I went online with a well know switching site and it appeared that SSE were offering an excellent deal for £21 a month unlimited calls, fibre B-Band etc. I duly put all of the info into their site and was told that I had to call them 'for a few remaining details' After 4 successive calls, being on hold for around 15-20 mins each time I gave up and called TT to discuss cancellation. Although not matching the SSE deal they have upgraded me to fibre for free, with no additional installation or delivery costs for a year and without all the hassle of switching, changing email etc. SSE would almost certainly have got my business initially if they had answered the phone (which TT did within 30 seconds) but clearly their customer service is either too over stretched or they just don't care. I can accept peak demand issues but the calls were over a few days with a min of 10 mins on hold each time before I gave up. Finally I cannot recommend highly enough the T-T representative in the Lancashire call centre who sorted it. HE was professional and interested, taking the time to offer me a good package for no additional cost without being pushy
