Having got fed up with BT's never ending stealth price rises, I looked for alternatives.
For £12 per month line rental with free, unlimited broadband this seems too good to be true.
It's actually much better than I expected.
I know they do traffic management, but I haven't been aware of it happening here yet.

The worst customer service.
Even after getting the confirmation of closing my sse account, the sse company carry on taking money and stole money from my bank account which left me in big trouble.

Had lots of problems, so they sent an engineer still had problems, they refused to send out a router as they sent one to start with. The router i first got was probably ok it was the phone socket that needed to be replaced. they sent me out a faulty replacement router. Spoke to a very unhelpful manager who refused to send me another router even after i promised to send it or the other one back. She said no as it would cost money to send it out. A whole £4.99 utter joke. many emails and calls, just to be fobbed off.its disgusting how they treat people just because they dont bother to test the routers that are old tec, never again will i have anything from them.

I only have Broadband from SSE and trying to leave them has proved to be a nightmare. It turns out there is no way to cancel unless you call them (can't email, can't do it on the website), so good luck with getting through on the phone at the moment.
Having thought I'd informed them it turns out I hadn't done it correctly, so received a bill for £39 for the month after I moved out. I finally got through to their customer service and was told I had to pay the bill and I would also get another bill as the account could only be closed from today! When I asked how I could appeal, she said "you can't". I wouldn't touch this company with a bargepole if I were you.

I have spent 3 months waiting for SSE to start the service. First appointment with openreach was cancelled by openreach and sse failed to tell me. They booked it on another day which I was not aware of so open reach attended when no one was there and it was a missed appointment. Sse apologised for the mistake and booked another appointment 6 weeks later. I confirmed 3 times over the phone including this morning since it was an am appointment, and was told the appointment was confirmed. Nobody turned up. I called they said they didn't understand and would call me back. They called back and said no appointment had been booked for today!! I raised a formal complaint They are trying to book another appointment now, but can not confirm a date, unbelievable. I'm wondering how there's so much confusion on the broadband side, perhaps I should look elsewhere and let them stick with energy, the signs are very bad.

Very happy with SSE broadband, pay for the highest rate broadband, always have a connection, no nasty surprises on bill, and a lot cheaper than our previous supplier BT who price hiked mid contract. Very straight forward and they don't ever phone trying to up sell like talktalk used to.

At first they were brilliant. But as the months went on the line speed getting to the router started dropping. then the dropouts started. Thinking it was the router, I bought a Netgear DSL6400. It instantly gave me a 2 meg line boost to router (that has not dropped by 1.5meg). Even with new router I am still getting dropouts very often. done a BT Wholesale speed test this evening. it states I am getting 30 meg download. When I download though it is mazing out at 0.8 meg. Will be contacting Swalec when their complaints line is open to call. Disgusting service!

Switched from BT after nearly 2 years of decreasing speeds and constant loss of service. BT constantly told me there was no problem and that it must be something wrong at my end. I decided to switch to SSE as they were cheaper and was not really expecting an improved service. However, my average speed has now doubled and the connection is constant (it used to drop about 10 times a day with BT). I had one bad day, with dropped connections, a couple of weeks after it was first installed and called SSE - they actually sorted the problem immediately and called me several times over the following days to check that everything was working ok. No problems since. That rare thing - a better than expected service.

Serious failings in the management of the business and customer service that make it not fit for purpose and not a reliable operator. After receiving an email advising that we would have an ‘upgrade’ to our service, we have been informed that SSE have a ‘known problem’ and hope to be able to rectify the issue within 48 hours or c96 hours from when the problem started. Try calling them? They aren’t available in the evenings until 8am in the morning. No website cover for the big transition project. Try emailing them? A 5 day turn around time? I waited 30 mins to be able to speak to customer services who were useless. DO NOT USE SSE FOR BROADBAND. They are not fit for purpose!

I switched from Sky to SSE it was faster and cheaper, what a mistake, i have been with them for 3 months now and the broadband keeps crashing, up to 30 times a day I sat in one day and watched it. I work on my laptop and every time the broadband goes down i lose everything. But here is the best bit, try and get in touch with customer service. 9 times i have called and i waited up to 45 minutes a call, i have had one email back from them saying call after 6pm, its still the same, no one answered. Customer service is rubbish and so is there broadband..I have told them i will send the router back and cancel my direct debit. Terrible service SSE.

Agree with everyone else. Signed up two months ago. Something "went wrong" with first order, so had to chase and they started the process all over again.
Apart from a welcome pack, no further communication from them. I chased them and a few days later got a text message confirming installation date for today. Took the day off work and no engineer turned up. Managed to get through on their webchat and was told the engineer was booked and to keep waiting until 6pm. No one came.
If you try and call them they are constantly busy and I've queued for almost an hour a time before giving up.
Totally hopeless. Don't bother with them at all.

I'll be honest, it was a leap of blind faith switching to SSE given the hate seen online but I'm very glad I did.
D/L ~50MBps pretty constant 24/7, certainly no buffering horror stories that I've seen elsewhere, U/L ~13MBps, decent.
£30 a month cheaper than my Virgin service with comparable upload speed, no frills, no unnecessary bells or whistles (don't think I even got an email but that's not a problem), just a good solid consistent internet service.
All set up within a few weeks (inc. engineer visit) of ordering, customer helpline answered promptly and always helpful when needed, really had 0 issues.
Props to SSE, recommended.

My speeds were eventually down to 3...yes 3mps.
Awful.

I just switched last week so early days, but after using talk talk and BT, it a breath of fresh air. The switch over did not go quite to plan due to BT but when I rang the customer support no menu's, no holding, just right through to a UK centre who are brilliant. I checked my speed last week before I switched and it was about 7.00 mb in the morning.(I used 3 checkers to get an average) As soon as I had my line connected I re checked the speed and was getting 18-20 mb. How does that work as its the same line. Anyway, as I said early days but its worth it just for the customer support!

What people have got to understand is there are freephone numbers that will get you to be able to talk to nice friendly people, hence the good reviews, but if something actually needs doing you have no chance because of an abysmal customer service infrastructure, hence the bad reviews.
And that explains why most of the reviews are split into these two contradictory camps.
I'm trying to switch as an old current customer to the new offer service, which surprisingly is allowed! But try finding the full and relevant terms and conditions on their website. It's about time ofcom got proactive on such things

Waited in all day for the BT engineer, only to be told that they often don't need to call at your home, but also don't tell you when they're finished at the exchange/ junction box.
I was told I was getting the full 80Mbps, got 55Mbps until I upgraded the master socket myself (which the engineer was supposed to do). I still only get 65Mbps.
This is not a truly unlimited service either, they have pretty brutal traffic shaping. My P2P traffic in is down to about 0.3% of full speed, even in the middle of the night.
I wouldn't have signed up knowing what I do know, and will terminate the contract after the 18 months is up

I applied online for their ultra fast fibre broadband mainly due to the cheap deal they had for £21. AVOID them at all costs!
On application I received an email confirming my order and I was aware it could take upto 21 days to change over. After 21 days I received nothing so rang customer services who were useless and told me that my online application hadn't gone through. I asked if they could fast track me another one and hey said no, you'll have to wait another 3 weeks. Appalling company, constantly on hold with customer services and reps appear to have no idea what they are doing. Don't bother with their online chat function either they haven't got a clue and apparently have 'limited access' to systems. I had problems with this lot with electricity many years ago but gave them the benefit of the doubt - AVOID AVOID AVOID!

I was paying £52.49/month with BT for Anytime Calls and basic ADSL Broadband (5Mbps). Seamless change to SSE and I now pay £31/month for Anytime Calls and fibre Broadband (getting 31Mbps). No set-up charge, prices guaranteed for 3 years and no contract period - brilliant! Saving at least £773 over the 3 years. Plus very helpful call centre staff.

Router arrived well ahead of switchover and after the pre-warned 10 minute wait to get it to activate, all was well. Internet speed currently the same as the old BT Infinity router, being out in the sticks I didn't expect anything amazing. Few issues setting up wired network devices, but after changing things about with IP addresses it all settled and the speed is comparable to the much more expensive BT Infinity 1

Broadband worked well till it failed on sunday am. Found there was no support after 1400 Sat. Spoke to the 1 person on support for phones who thought the broadband line was OK but she didnt have any broadband training. Documentation with the router is non existant. So no advice what to do if you can resolve problems with a power off/on. No info on how to log onto the router admin from a laptop. Found that out by guesswork. Once on I could see a PPP error. But again no info on what user/password I should have set here. No info on whether I should reboot to factory settings from the laptop or the reset 'hole' on back of router. So no broadband for 24 hrs due to lack of support or any support info. Not every customer could have tried fixing these problems, but I could have, if there had been some support paperwork with the router. Seriously considering asking to go back to my old slow& more expensive PhoneCoop provider. They were good & reliable.
Not of this helped by SSE failure to realise the original go live request had failed & thus my cutover was 2 weeks later than required. Plus SSE sent out router only 1 working day before cutover & then set out another on the afternoon after I went live. Overall a shambles of a company for broadband & I wont be recommending it to anybody. Shame as the phone service has been good.

Switched from BT but was worried due to the ever age to poor reviews on here.
The service and switchover was flawless and I am now receiving 70meg download speed from an advertised 72 meg.
Don't believe the rubbish on here and to top it all off its £21 a month for my line rental, unlimited 72 meg broadband and calls.
Say goodbye to the so called big names they are ripping you off to use the same lines.
Note: I have not noticed or felt any traffic throttling during usage so unsure how it works as I have seen a lot of comments regarding this.

Avoid!!! worst broadband provider ever frequent speeds of less than 6mps and when we complained told we were getting 11 mbps which was a total joke as we tested speed hundreds of times and never had any where near this. After we complained speeds got worse on average 4.5 mbps and now we are leaving the internet is far far worse/ unuseable if I could give a minus star rating I would avoid at all cost.

Wish we hadn't bothered moving to SSE. Due to have ultra fibre bb installed and working on 1st june. Open Reach engineer arrived (late) and said he couldn't do it. To add insult to injury he lied to SSE saying we weren't in when he called (we can prove we were). Endless calls to SSE to tell them to just put us onto ADSL as we have businesses relying on internet access. Said that they would fast track it soit would be 2 days to be switched on, then have just been told it willbe 10 days. What a shambles of customer service!

I am so frustrated with this company. Been with them since 2015, all was good until Ovo came on the scene. What a complete cock up!! Been waiting since July 2022 to get them to send me a bill. D.D was changed to Ovo Energy Ltd, but has remained inactive since July. Have been trying to contact them for 3 days. Phone ringing out continually or you get cut off, appalling customer service! Found another number to ring(one of many I might add),and was actually answered. Very nice, polite man, who has assured me my bill will be taken out in Nov. He apologised for the cock up, although its not actually his fault, but takes the flack and frustration from SSE customers. So, I will wait with baited breath, and hope, my bills will actually, be taken out my bank. Have had advice from Citizans Advice, who said they were in breach of contract under common law, and maybe a phone call to Trading Standards wouldn't go amiss. Let's hope the gentleman I spoke to today,is giving me the right information, as I don't really want to go down the legal route if it can be avoided. It's amazing really when you think they chase thousands of clients that don't pay their bills, when, all I want to do is actually pay mine!!!! Let's hope Talk Talk will be better, but I doubt it, we shall see.

If you want customer service go elsewhere. They keep you on the phone for at least 30 minutes and then just connect to a non-existent advisor. You can hear voices in the background but it's a complete waste of time expecting anyone to talk to you. Worst company for customer service I have dealt with and their website is as useless as their advisors, if you have the patience, because that site is slower than 99% of the ones I visit. Cheap is not cheap when you get rubbish.
