Reasons to choose Gigaclear

  • Ultrafast broadband - few providers in the UK can match Gigaclear's fastest offering
  • Slower options available - if you don't need 900Mb, there are slower (and cheaper) options available
  • Guaranteed price - your monthly price is guaranteed for the length of the minimum contract term
  • Mesh network Smart WiFi - The faster tier Ultrafast 300 and Hyperfast 900 products come with Smart WiFi with an additional mesh network WiFi node as standard
  • Speeds should be as advertised - as a fibre-to-the-home service, the real world speeds should come close to matching the advertised rate
  • Fast rural access - Gigaclear is considerably faster than most other rural providers
  • Very impressive upload speeds - the upload speeds match the download speeds: that's 900Mb on the fastest package!
  • Free customer support - support is available by phone 24 hours a day
  • No landline needed - you don't need a landline to sign up for Gigaclear
  • Customer satisfaction - Gigaclear are rated by their customers among the very best for speed, satisfaction, service and reliability

Possible downsides

  • Very limited coverage - Gigaclear is only available to around 65,000 homes (although the target is over 300,000 by the end of 2021)
  • Complex installation - installation involves a lot more than just plugging in a cable, and is expensive for the 5% of customers who don't qualify for standard install
  • More expensive than rivals - although the service is likely to be faster than its rivals, it's also likely to be more expensive
  • No short contracts - the minimum contract is 18 months on all packages, with one month's notice when you leave

Features at a glance

  • Averages range from 30Mb to 900Mb symmetric - that's 900Mb download AND upload!

  • 18 month contracts as standard, 1 month notice to leave

  • Truly unlimited usage allowances on all packages

  • Activation usually £30, standard installation is free but 5% of customers liable for professional installtion costs, subject to no obligation survey

  • UK-based support line open 8am to 8pm all week, an alternative support provider is used for enquiries outside these hours

  • Smart WiFi with an additional network node provided as standard on Ultrafast 300 and Hyperfast 900, this forms a seamless mesh network in your home giving better WiFi coverage

  • Gigaclear Broadband have published a Traffic Management Policy

No stars whatsoever. Everyone else in our village was connected up months ago. Despite endless calls we are still unconnected. The cable was laid along our lane and there is a gigaclear box on our land by our driveway. (numbers on the box EN124 and B125). We keep getting different stories. The latest is about needing permission to cross neighbour's land, when there is a cable and box by our driveway.Has someone made a mistake that no one wants to own up to? What on earth is going on?

This company is really very poor and doesn't appear to know what it is doing. We moved to the edge of a village and repeatedly checked the Gigaclear website for our new address which stated "Great News! Your Gigaclear connection is now ready to be activated." Once we moved in and signed up, we were told that actually, no, the connection didn't even exist and we'd have to wait a month for a site survey. The survey was eventually conducted and then we repeatedly had to contact them to get the quote. Our landlord had a few questions about the installation of the fibre and after a month of emailing and phoning them, we are no closer to those questions being answered. Every time we phone them (don't email, you'll never get a response), we are told that the person we had been speaking to is not available and we have to repeat the entire conversation with someone new, who apparently can't bring anything up on their computer about our previous conversations. They then inform us that someone will phone us back later that day. Guess what - they almost never do! So we phone up the next day and repeat the whole process. It appears that they don't actually know what they are doing and just want to fob us off as quickly as possible and make it someone else's problem.

So after three months, we are no closer to getting Gigaclear installed, although from the other reviews on this site, perhaps we have dodged a bullet?! I can't speak about the reliability and speed of the connection, but their customer service is appalling, practically non-existent. What would happen if we had the fibre installed and had a problem? I shudder to think. £50 a month is not cheap and that's after the £650 it would cost to install their fibre... for that, I would expect top-notch support and service and I don't think Gigaclear are capable of providing that.

I'm sure if you moved in to a property that was already Gigaclear-enabled and it was that or nothing, you'd probably be ok (if the alternative was nothing). But if you ever need to contact them about anything, don't say you weren't warned!

The customer services element is shocking. In fact I not sure they know what Customer Service is.
Nobody can help you, you get passed around and around and just told the same story.
Our village recently got fibre installed, over 100 houses can get it, yet 6 houses in the village cant. They ay we have to wait around 2 years for them to test...…. just doesn't make sense
Plus nobody will ever call you back, exploring other options

What can I add to these reviews.. I have never received the 300Mb as promised for any length of time and have been battling poor customer service and ineptitude for almost a year. I am listing my speeds on twitter (colwobs33) and am doing the WIRED SPEED TO THE NODE and also wireless speed to my laptop with just that using wireless.. If you complain often enough you'll get a free node, complain a bit more and you'll get the network switch you need cos the node only has one ethernet port available for any wired connections, and you need everything possible connected by LAN cables.

Gigaclear are dreadful with customer service useless. Yes there are individuals that are helpful, but most don’t care and just want to fob you off.
We were out for 2 weeks in November and less than 3 months later out for 2 weeks again with no sign of it being fixed as they need to dig up the road - again because the cables haven’t been laid deep enough and are just below the surface. They’ve cut costs to the detriment of providing a reliable service. The offer of compensation is irrelevant, a reliable service is what’s needed! If you have an alternative provider, avoid Gigaclear!

We had a service engineer come out to inspect our property to install the fibre connection in July 2019. Despite a number of emetic emails saying that they were busy with our enquiry and that they just needed the approval of engineering we have heard nothing more.So 8 months of waiting and chasing and a very poor response. I think that their management team of Delivery Director, Nathan Rundle and Drew Ritchie as chief operating officer needs rebooting. But one should ask their CEO Gareth Williams why they cannot deliver.

I signed up to the 900 mbps package which I received for 1 week. Following an outage my speed is now 1/4 of what is contracted. Calls and emails to resolve this are ignored I am stuck in a never ending loop between customer service and engineering. No one ever returns my calls. Although the connection is better speedwise than plusnet (12mbps) that is not the point, I was sold a service I am contracted to which I am not receiving.

I pay for a business broadband with 24hr call to fix. They cant get an engineer out for 11 days!!
Nothing they can do because they are all on holiday. Fault reported 23rd December so i get they may busy but 23rd/ 24th are working business days, as are 27th,30th and 31st Jan. Not for Gigaclear apparently who let all their engineers have 2 weeks holiday! But their paying customers are told to try and buy a Vodafone WiFi dongle and that should get you get through! Not for business PC users with no WiFi capability it isn't. Oh and they will give a months free subscription and pay any WiFi costs. Really unhelpful, and clearly no business sense at all.

The speeds are good, when they work, but therein lies the problem. Multiple outages every month, it's like living in Russia in the 1970s, and when the outages occur their customer service is appalling. Expensive, and unreliable, therefore avoid where possible.

Northamptonshire Gigaclear
Very quick installation - within a week from ordering! WiFi speeds are around 80mbs throughout the house, which is really good. To get the 300mbs will need connecting via Ethernet cable. That is fine, however, because the router is so rubbish, they have installed a Velop Mesh booster to boost wifi, this makes the router just a signal receiver (bridging unit) and you can't use the Ethernet ports as they don't work! Problem is the booster only has one Ethernet port, so will have to buy a multi port Ethernet switch. That is 3 devices that need plugging in because the router is rubbish. Add the additional phone adapter from Vonage, that makes 4 plugged in devices to replace one for 'normal' broadband - so much for progress and efficiency! Can't understand why the Velop Mesh booster doesn't have the same number of Ethernet ports as the router. Or rather why they haven't replaced the router for one that is fit to do the job in the first place!
No problems with the service so far though!

Gigaclear Broadband Buyers Guide - Is Gigaclear right for you?

Can I get Gigaclear broadband?

Gigaclear are a rural broadband provider. The service currently covers around 65,000 premises across a dozen counties, with funding to expand across other parts of the UK in future. Their target is to be available to more than 300,000 homes by the end of 2021.

Gigaclear is a fibre-to-the-home network. This is different to most fibre offerings in the UK. The fibre cables run directly into your property, and can lead to a much faster and more reliable service.

Most fibre providers in the UK use fibre-to-the-cabinet. Here, the fibre connection runs as far as your nearest street cabinet, and a copper cable is used from there to your home. This can result in you achieving far less than the advertised speeds, especially if you live a long way from the street cabinet (as is very often the case in rural areas). Such slowdowns should not be an issue with Gigaclear's service, although its coverage is much more limited.

Use our postcode checker to find out if Gigaclear is available in your village. If it isn't you can register your interest via the Gigaclear website. However, for the service to be considered for installation in your area it will need significant interest from the rest of your community, and you'll need to be within 3km of existing fibre infrastructure or another village that already has access to Gigaclear.

What packages are available?

Gigaclear have four fibre broadband packages available for residential customers. The main difference between the options is the speeds they offer and the addition of Smart WiFi on the two fastest tiers.

The packages are:

  • Superfast 30 - unlimited fibre broadband with download and upload speeds averaging at 30Mb
  • Ultrafast 100 - unlimited fibre broadband with download and upload speeds averaging at 100Mb
  • Ultrafast 300 with Smart WiFi - unlimited fibre broadband with download and upload speeds averaging at 300Mb
  • Hyperfast 900 with Smart WiFi - the fastest package offers an unlimited service, with upload and download speeds averaging at 900Mb

All the packages are on a minimum 18 month contract with a guarantee that the price will not rise during that period. There is an activation fee, and 5% of customers will have to pay £120 installation, subject to a no obligation survey. Because installation for fibre-to-the-home services are more complex, these fees are somewhat higher than you'd normally expect to pay.

Smart WiFi is provided as standard on the faster products, this gives you an additional WiFi node to extend your network coverage to the furthest parts of a typical 3-bedroom house, you also have the option to pay extra to add additional nodes, up to 3 total in addition to the router, so that larger homes may also benefit. The Smart WiFi technology produces a mesh network, meaning that regardless of whether you connect to the router or a node, the same password and network ID are used, so you can seamlessly move around the home without needing to re-connect to a different access point.

If you prefer to combine your broadband and phone into a single bundle you can add a voice over IP (VOIP) calls deal from Vonage. This uses your internet connection to make and receive calls, but you can usually keep your existing phone number. The main downside to a VOIP service is that it won't work if your internet is down, including if there's a power cut.

Which package should I choose?

Unlike many fibre providers, the deals from Gigaclear offer vastly different speeds, and significantly different prices, too. Choose carefully!

Superfast 30 is the entry level package, and the 30Mb speed is in the same ballpark as a basic fibre service from most other providers. However, due to the fact that this is a fibre-to-the-home service the performance should be more consistent, and the upload speed - also 30Mb - a lot faster. This will handle streaming, gaming and downloading for all the family, and is likely to be fast enough for most households.

Ultrafast 100 is comparable with ultrafast products from the other providers who are able to offer these speeds, and will handle anything you can throw at it. Want to watch Netflix in 4K on more than one device? That won't be a problem!

Ultrafast 300 with Smart WiFi is faster than you'll find from almost any other provider, and can do everything that Ultrafast 100 does, with a bit more oomph, and should future proof your speed needs for quite a while. Plus you get all the benefits of Smart WiFi's mesh network support and additional WiFi node as standard.

And then there's the Hyperfast 900 with Smart WiFi. With incredible download and upload speeds of 900Mb it ranks along the fastest broadband services available in the UK, and faster than even most providers in urban areas. To be honest, it's overkill for most home users, especially considering the hefty price and everything Ultrafast 300 with Smart WiFi gives you. But if you have specific requirements - you work from home and need to share large files, for example - then this will do the job.

Before you sign up you should also make sure you're clear about the installation process. Installation requires a cable to be run from the fibre pot on the boundary of your property to the router inside your house. This means a hole will need to be drilled in your wall, and for concrete, paving or garden to be dug up outside. This will all be reinstated by approved installers, but installation can be quite expensive as a result. You can choose to install it yourself if you have the tools and know-how.

Of course, the main consideration with Gigaclear is whether it's even available in your village. If it isn't you can register your interest on their website. Encourage your neighbours to do the same, if you can. And if it is, check that you don't have other, cheaper options available to you - unless you really need that speed!

Points to consider before you choose

  • Is the service available in your area?
  • How fast are the other broadband services available to you?
  • Do you need fast upload speeds?
  • Does your home tend to have WiFi coverage issues that Smart WiFi would address?
  • Are you happy to take out a 18 month contract?
Compare all Gigaclear packages

What do I get when I sign up?

It's good to know what you're getting when you sign up to a broadband provider, so you can budget for any extras you may need. In the case of Gigaclear, it's a strictly no-frills service.

  • Free wireless router - All users get a free Gigaclear powered by Linksys Wi-Fi router designed specifically for fibre-to-the-home broadband.
  • Smart WiFi node on Ultrafast 300 and Hyperfast 900 - The faster products come with a Smart WiFi node (upgradable to 3 total nodes in addition to the router) that form a mesh network to seamlessly cover areas of weak WiFi signal within your come, typical 3 to 5 bedroom homes can be covered depending on the number of nodes.
  • Installation kit - If you opt to install the service yourself you'll get an installation kit including instruction guide and a cable up to 50m in length. If you need a longer cable you have to pay for it.
  • Parental controls - The free parental control software enables you to restrict what sites your children can view
  • Customer support - Free customer support is available by phone, 24 hours a day (via a standard rate number). Email support is also available.

What are the benefits of Gigaclear broadband?

So what are the best reasons for considering broadband from Gigaclear?

  • Fast rural internet access - Internet services in rural areas is notoriously terrible. If Gigaclear is available in your area it's all but guaranteed to be the best you can get, by some margin.
  • Unbeatable speeds - The Hyperfast 900 package is as fast as you can get in the UK, even compared to services you can get in big cities. Better still, fibre-to-the-home broadband should deliver the advertised speeds.
  • Very fast upload speeds - With upload speeds that match the download speeds, the service is ideal if you share a lot of large files, or make video calls.
  • Smart WiFi mesh network as standard - On faster products the first node in a mesh network that will cover weak WiFi signal spots in your home is provided for free, with an easy upgrade path to adding two more nodes to the Smart WiFi network as needed.
  • Guaranteed price - Your monthly price is guaranteed for the length of the 18 month minimum contract term, unlike many other providers who may institute price increases at any time with only 30 days notice.
  • Standalone broadband - The Gigaclear service doesn't use a phone line. They won't sell you one, and you don't need to take one from another company if you don't need it (although you will if you do).
  • Unlimited access - All of Gigaclear's broadband packages come with no limits on the amount of data you can download.
  • Free tech support - Free customer support is available by phone whenever you need it.
  • Highly rated - Gigaclear are a highly rated broadband provider. They rank best for speed, and in the top three for satisfaction, service and reliability.Isps

What are the drawbacks of Gigaclear?

No service is perfect, so what are the possible downsides of choosing Gigaclear?

  • More expensive - Gigaclear brings ultrafast broadband to rural areas, but you do pay a premium for this.
  • Difficult installation - Fibre-to-the-home is a lot more difficult to install than the more common fibre-to-the-cabinet, and may even require concrete or paving to be dug up in your front garden. In most cases this is free, but 5% of customers will need full installation. You can do it yourself if you have the skills, while the price for using an approved installer starts at £120 (subject to a no obligation survey).
  • Very limited availability - Although Gigaclear is continuing to expand into more communities, availability is currently still very limited.
  • Few extras - The service comes with minimal extras.
  • Telephone service requires broadband - You can add a VOIP phone service to your Gigaclear plan, if you need it. However, this only works where broadband is available. You cannot make calls - even emergency calls - when there's a power cut.
